Q: How do I copy the audio from a CD to make them into
MP3's?
A:
What you are referring to is "ripping" a CD or digitally
copying the tracks from your compact audio disc to your
PC. Some programs will copy and compress the
tracks into MP3's in one step. Other programs will copy
the tracks as WAV files (uncompressed audio) then compress
them into MP3s in a second step. |
Here's what you need before you can copy a
DVD:
- A CD to copy (yes, some idiot would forget
that if I didn't list it)
- A program that will "rip" the music from the
disc
- About 15-20 minutes per disc (more or less
depending on your drive speed, etc.)
DISCLAIMER FOR THIS TUTORIAL: Only copy CDs you
already own, blah blah blah, copying CDs you don't own is
stealing, yada yada yada, and as always; don't play with
yourself or you'll go blind...
For this tutorial, we will be ripping the Pink
Floyd classic "Dark Side of the Moon"

- Start the program (i'm using MusicMatch -
get
it here)
- Put the CD in your drive
- MusicMatch looks up the track listing and
starts playing the CD for you ... well, isn't that conveeeeeenient?!?!?!
- Click STOP to stop the disc from
playing
- Click "COPY TO COMPUTER"
[PiC]
- You'll see a dialog box telling you that you
have to copy the songs to your computer ... a real
stranglehold on the obvious, huh?
- Click "YES" and the recorder window pops up,
click "START COPY" to, uh, start copying I guess....
[PiC]
- You'll see the progress of each track being
ripped [PiC]
- When it finishes copying, your CD should pop
out on its own
- Close the recorder by clicking the small "X"
in the upper right corner of its window.
- Click "LIBRARY" in the left column of the main
window to see your newly ripped CD [PiC]
- END
